シーズン１　エピソード４「女は多面体」（１）


今日からエピソードの４に入れます。

Previously on “Desperate Housewives”…
日本語だと「先週までのお話」とか「先週までのあらすじ」となるところですが、英語だとPreviously on ＋タイトル名　になるのは面白いといつも思います。

Susan played with fire….and could get burned…
ここの訳は「スーザンはやけど寸前」となっていました。
“could”（過去において）「〜する可能性もあった、〜しかねなかった、〜する場合もあった」

….and Gabriel found herself a playmate.
find ＋○＋△　○に△を見つけてあげる
例）Tom found me a Taxi.（トムが私にタクシーを見つけてくれた）
これはTom found a taxi for me.と書き換えも可能です。

Lynette couldn’t get her kids to stop playing…,and Bree played hardball.Everyone has a little dirty laundry.

メアリーが生前の自分について語ります。いろいろな肩書きを持っていた彼女ですが、最後についた肩書きは悲しすぎますね。
When I was alive, I maintained many different identities: lover, wife, and ultimately victim. Yes, labels are important to the living. They dictate how people see themselves.


続いて友人リネットの話もします。
Like my friend Lynette, she used to see herself as a career woman, and a hugely successful one at that. She was known for her power lunches, her eye catching presentations, and her ruthlessness in wiping out competition, but Lynette gave up her career to assume a new label: increasingly satisfying role of full-time mother.

リネットは電話に出ます。幼稚園からかかってきたのです。また例の双子が何かしたようです（笑）
“Scavo residence. Yes, this is me.”

But unfortunately for Lynette, this new label frequently fell short of what was advertised.
