Is it good or bad to encourage kids’ fighting spirit?
My answer is “Yes”, but there is one important condition. Adults around kids have to be very careful about taking care of kids’ mentality.
At a cram school, where a daughter of one of my students goes, the seat positions are fixed according to the test results. Their seat positions change after every test.
However, none of them seem hurt. My student’s daughter studies hard every day now.
Both parents and teachers have a careful talk with kids after each test.
It is a very controversial topic, and hard to decide what is the best answer.

子どもたちの競争心を煽ることはいいことなんでしょうか、それともよくないことでしょうか？
私は「いいことだ」と思いますが、大事な条件が一つつきます。まわりの大人たちが子どもたちのメンタルケアをしっかりやることです。
生徒さんのうちのお一人のお嬢さんが塾に通っていらっしゃいますが、その塾ではテストの成績で座る場所が決まっているそうです。テストのたびごとに席順は変わります。
でも、誰も傷ついている様子はないようです。お嬢さんは毎日一生懸命勉強しています。
ご父兄も先生もテストのたびごとに、じっくりお子さんとお話をします。
本当に難しい問題で何が１番いいのか、というのを決めるのは難しいですね。
